So Long and Thanks for all the Flash on the Beach

by Devon O.· September 17, 2011· in Flash, Life· 2 comments tags: flash on the beach, fotb
So, another Flash on the Beach has just has just drawn to a close and, as was announced by John Davey, the head Ringmaster of the fantastic circus that is Flash on the Beach, 2011’s is most likely the last FOTB ever. Not to worry though, Mr. Davey is looking at replacing it with something more technology agnostic, as FOTB has slowly been moving towards anyway. My guess is that around this time next year there will be a Geeky by Nature, Brighton event taking place at the Dome – but that’s only a guess. The ironic part is, this year the most popular sessions (at least from this Flash dev’s point of view) were those revolving around Flash. Several were so packed that people were turned away at the door. I know that I, myself, wasn’t able to get in to see Rob Bateman’s session which really ticked me off at the moment, but it was rumored that well over a hundred folks were prevented from seeing Eugene Zatepyakin which is really a damn shame, but just shows you that people are indeed still interested in Flash. The event itself though… Strange one this year. Seems a bit of the normal funding […]

Some Windchimes and More from FOTB

by Devon O.· September 26, 2009· in Flash, Life· 4 comments tags: flash on the beach, fotb, jiglib, jiglibflash, papervision3d
So I got an idea into my head while at Flash on the Beach. This quick example I made pretty much has nothing to do with it, but it’s a first draft prototype of what I was thinking of. Anyway, check out these windchimes made with jiglibflash and pv3d. Use your mouse to orbit around a little and to see the chimes in action, blow into your microphone (okay, so you can talk, shout, or thump on the mic, if you’d like, but they’re windchimes – why ruin the illusion). One thing I noticed about jiglib is that it seems to register collisions (using the RigidBody.collisions array) even when there aren’t any. Need to look into that, and if anyone has better suggestions for collision detection with jiglib, post ’em here. And for those interested, here’s a few more videos and pictures from Flash on the Beach ’09. Maybe someday I’ll join the rest of the world and get a Flickr and/or Youtube account for stuff like this… Here’s a nice video of Joa Ebert demonstrating his Java to .swf compiler. Still blown away by this. After 9 minutes of typing (on a completely unmarked/black keyboard!) Joa hits the compile […]

FOTB in Review – Day 3

by Devon O.· September 23, 2009· in Flash, Liberty, Life· 0 comments tags: flash on the beach, fotb
Bit of an overcast day today in Brighton, but still fairly comfortable. Started out the day with a bit of a let down. Had to decide between Andre Michelle and Serge Jespers. Unwisely, I picked Jespers who turned out to be a no-show. He was replaced with Mark Doherty who did a fairly good job for an unscheduled stand in. He gave a quick run down on designing for web, desktop, and mobile and presented a few good tips (such as using SWiX for data transfer on mobile devices that may choke on xml). Really made me want to look into the whole Open Screen Project / Fund. Next up was the always inspirational Mario Klingemann, self proclaimed “math groupie”. Not much to say here. It’s a presentation that really needs to be seen. The man is a supergenius and his enthusiasm is truly contagious. Then came Seb Lee-Delisle with a little look at PV3D usage and “tween engine bashing”. A lot of fun here with some anaglyphic 3D (glasses included) and some micro glow stick motion detection. Finally came a sneak peak at some upcoming features of the incredible Big and Small site. After lunch came the Jam Throw […]

FOTB in Review – Day 2

by Devon O.· September 22, 2009· in Flash, Liberty, Life· 5 comments tags: flash on the beach, fotb
Another surprisingly beautiful day in Brighton. Started the day with the “Elevator Pitches” session – 20 speakers all talking for 3 minutes each. A few that stood out to me to delve into later: zenbullets.com, a generative art blog with source code for download; swingpants.com, where we saw Jon Howard make 3 games in 3 minutes using Away3D and an undisclosed physics engine. ASAXB looked like it may be a useful way to bind .xml to .as classes and was one of the funnier pitches. Andrew Fitzgerald (aka desuade) gave a nice look at the partigen particle engine (though not the best examples were shown). Perhaps the most surprising presentation (at least to me) was from  Bartek Drozdz of everydayflash. He showed how to build a 3D bowling game using Papervision3D and Jiglibflash physics engine. Sound familiar? Well, it was very reminiscent of this tutorial I did for the techlabs a couple months ago including using a timer to determine the end of each roll and the pin skin rotation to determine if they were down. Now, Drozdz is the genius who gave us as3dmod, so I’d really like to give the benefit of the doubt, but it’s a mighty big […]
