FITC in Quick Review

Well another FITC Amsterdam has come and gone and left its indelible mark of energy and inspiration. Thought I’d share a bit of what went on, however I’m writing this from a teensy laptop that came with the flat I’m staying in. It was a much appreciated gesture, but is not very conducive to typing, so this will probably be shorter and less detailed than intended. Besides I’m in Amsterdam another 3 days and got stuff to do… Day 1 Started the day with the Adobe Keynote presentation given by Richard Galvan and Mark Anders. This had its good and bad points. Nothing really new was presented here – it was all the stuff we’ve seen blogged from AdobeMax and MWC. Still it was interesting to see some of this in action: how Flash performs on Android devices for example or how Device Central CS5 will allow you to test the accelerometer of mobile devices (that is a great feature. My hat’s off to Adobe for that one). Very exciting stuff in the world of mobile development. Next up for me was James Eberhardt’s presentation on Building iPhone Apps in Flash CS5. FITCward Bound

Just a quickie post to say I’m heading off to FITC Amsterdam tomorrow morning (and rub it in for those who can’t make it. Heh). Still haven’t decided on which presentations to check out (it’s a damn shame they’ve shortened the event to only 2 days and have 4 simultaneous presentations per time slot), or packed, or a multitude of other tasks that need to be accomplished before the morrow, but oh well… If anyone’s going and feels so inclined, keep an eye out for the cool coding cowboy below and stop and say howdy.

More Augmented Reality with HTML5 && Flash

Okay, so my last post was really a bit of a joke. I was just seeing how many of the trendiest tech buzzwords I could get running on a single page, and admittedly, it performed horribly. I did learn something in the process though. If I left the html5 canvas link out of that chain, the Flash / Unity communication was actually quite smooth and ran nicely. Likewise, if I cut out the Unity business, the Flash / HTML communication was grand. So, for my next experiment, I decided to leave out the Unity and do some Flash and HTML5 augmented reality. The results are actually pretty impressive. You can check it out for yourself here or just have a look at the screenshot below. A big thanks to Thatcher Ulrich who provided 99.9% of the “3d image in a canvas element” javascript. And it just goes to show – Flash and HTML5 can play together just fine…

Flash, HTML5, Unity3D, && Augmented Reality

Can’t decide which trendy tech bandwagon to hop onto? Try them all at once! Okay – so I’d never recommend mixing all this crap together in a real world app, but it was fun just to give it a go and see what would happen. Thought maybe the internet would explode or something. To see what I’m rambling about, check out the experiment here. You’ll need this augmented reality marker (just ignore the “right hand”/”left hand” business). When prompted, allow webcam access in the Flash portion of the experiment (bottom left). Hold the marker upside right towards your camera (a green rectangle will appear around the embedded flash when the marker is detected) and spin it like a steering wheel to steer the car in the Unity3D portion of the experiment (top center). The harder you steer, the more purpley the background will appear (that’s the HTML5 canvas bit). Here’s a little screenshot below for those not interested in being bothered by all the hassle…

Lorenz Attractor – HTML5 Stylee

First, let me just say this up front, I will give up Flash when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. When Flash is outlawed only outlaws will code in Actionscript. Add any other cliches you’d like to, here. The point is, I love the Flash Platform and will continue to use it for years to come. But, let’s face it, anyone who refuses to expand their skillset – whether it be with HTML5, Unity3D, or any other technology – or who at least chooses not to know their enemies won’t last very long in this game. So, that in mind, here is my first go at HTML5: a simple Lorenz Attractor. Not the most way-out thing folks have done, but ya gotta start somewhere. A few things I learned along the way: Trying to code in a OO fashion with Javascript is a serious pain in the ass. It’s funny that people have said this is the future of the web. For a Flash developer, it’s like stepping backwards in time 4 or 5 years. Any of you out there remember coding classes in Actionscript 1?
