More Halloween fun: Pickled Punk’s Magic Mirror of Horror! A webcam is required. Some features – face detection/augmented reality, and the ability to save images to your local pc or post them  to Twitter via Twitpic (I apologize to my few Twitter and Facebook followers for all the testing/spam). Enjoy!

Real Drawing to Augmented Reality

by Devon O.· October 23, 2009· in Actionscript, Flash· 4 comments tags: augmented reality, papervision3d
Augmented reality may prove to just be a flash in the pan trend in the Flash world, but let’s face it – it’s fun. So, that in mind, here’s a little something I was just fiddling around with: a small app that takes an actual drawing (as in pen and paper – you know – analog) and converts it into a 3d augmented reality thingamajig. To give it a try below: Print out this marker (ignore the left hand / right hand bs. That was for another project and I was too lazy to create a new marker image). Make a small drawing on a piece of paper. You can use colours, but keep the contrast as high as possible (a black drawing on white paper will work best, but not be very interesting). Double click on the app below and allow webcam access. Hold your drawing up so that it fits nicely into the red square then hit the space bar. When the app tells you to, put down your drawing and hold up the marker you printed out to see your work of art hover in 3 dimensions in front of your face. Be amazed… If you don’t […]

Halloween I

by Devon O.· October 21, 2009· in Flash, Liberty, Life· 1 comments
A little early Halloween treat. I just love this time of year. By the way, you’ll need your sound on for the full effect. And try moving your mouse across the .swf. For a real Halloween treat, assuming you have about 20 some minutes to kill, I recommend turning off all the lights, turning your volume to max, crouching somewhere in your darkened room and listening to the entire song – “I Have a Special Plan for this World”. The audio piece is a story/poem written by horror author Thomas Ligotti and set to “music” and read by David Tibet of Current 93 (by far, my favorite musician). It’s… well.. let’s just say it’s rather disturbing. But in a good way… More Halloween fun to come, I’m sure…

3D Scanner (Kinda Sorta)

by Devon O.· October 07, 2009· in Actionscript· 4 comments
When I saw a tweet from @drwoohoo with a link pointing to this page on how to build a 3d scanner, my first reaction was to jump up and ask the guys here at work where our projector was. Well, as it turns out, unfortunately, our projector has been either misappropriated or misplaced. Not to be daunted, I tried to see if I could reproduce the effect without the projector and came up with the thing below. What’s it do? Well, basically, using your webcam, the app takes four pictures. The first is left untouched. The other three have “scanlines” projected onto them moved a fractional amount in each image (as described in the article above). The scanlines are warped onto each image with a displacement map filter to attempt to mimic real light and shadow falling onto 3 dimensional being. Those three images are then desaturated and blended together into a single black and white map. That map and the original image are then used in a modified version of this pretty cool 3d pixel generator from Flash and Math. Which is to say, the original image is projected into 3d space using displacement data from the black and […]

A Little Metaball Action

by Devon O.· October 02, 2009· in Actionscript· 3 comments tags: metaball
And now for something completely different… The other day, for reasons I can’t even explain to myself, I googled for metaball examples. No real need, I just rather like the way they look, all blobby and stuff. Well, one of the first things to come up was this nifty example in Java by Gordon Williams. I promptly decompiled the java and ported it all over to Actionscript 3. Afterwards I emailed the author and asked if it would be all right to publish the AS source, and he kindly said it would be fine (I know, I know, it’s a bit of an ass backward way to operate, but if he hadn’t been kind enough to say it was all right, you wouldn’t be reading this now). So this is the result I got (double click the thing to get it going or stop it): As you can, it’s currently (at least on my machine) running at around a craptacular 11 frames per second. If anyone would like to try their hand at optimizing the sucker please have at the code below (and please post your results here – I’d like to see what people come up with). A couple […]
