by Devon O.· December 31, 2008· in Life· 0 comments
Yes, it’s the same bit of Flash animation I posted last New Year’s, but now with added 3d ‘splosions thanks to the magic of Flash Player 10. Happy New Year’s all, from Deirdre and me!

Website Generation Tool Take II

by Devon O.· December 29, 2008· in AIR, Flash· 53 comments
Many moons ago I posted an AIR tool that would allow a user to drag a .swf file into a target area and have it spit out all the javascript, html, etc into a designated output directory. I’m not sure if anyone other than I ever used the thing, but I actually use it constantly at work and it seemed high time for a little update. Well version 2 is here, and while it has the same bad name (“OBO Site GatherAIR”), it’s much more user friendly. This version now features template html files that can be selected. It ships with three templates (“Basic”, “Fullscreen with SWFFIT” and “Flash Centered in HTML” – personally, I don’t care much for the last as it relies on a table to do the centering. All are standards compliant though). Creating your own templates is a piece of cake. Just create a .html file that you’d like to use as a template and give it a memorable name (the name of the file is what will appear in the templates drop down box). Use the following abbreviatations inside the .html file (check out the included templates for examples of how to use the abbreviations): […]

OBO_NumberScrubber – a new UI Widget

by Devon O.· December 27, 2008· in Actionscript, Flash· 9 comments
I’ve seen ’em used in After Effects for ages and now they’re a part of the Flash CS4 interface, so I figured why not a new Flash widget. This little UI component allows users to change numerical values by clicking then dragging their mouse to the left and right over the number display. By clicking once and not moving the mouse, the number can be adjusted manually. For a better idea of what I’m talking about, check out the example below: The above example was created with the following document class: [crayon-603d096e404dd508837287/] You can preview, download, and peruse the documentation of the entire onebyonedesign UI library here. And in other news… A Belated Merry Christmas to all from the wife and I. Hope the New Year is great for all…

Essential AIR & FITC

by Devon O.· December 21, 2008· in AIR, Flash, Life· 0 comments
So much going on all at once as this year draws to a close… The Essential Guide to Flash CS4 AIR Development is now in stock at Amazon! I worked as Technical Reviewer on this thing and can say in all honesty, this is a very good book from Marco Casario, et al. For those who develop AIR applications using Flash, this is a great stocking stuffer idea! Hell, get two – one for home and one for the office (and no, I don’t get commision). And, from the greatest wife in the world, I just got an early Christmas present: two tickets to FITC Amsterdam in February. I can’t wait! Presentations from Lee Brimelow, Mike Chambers, Keith Peters, Andre Michelle, Grant Skinner, and a bijillion other big name Flash Stars. Two days and nights in the world’s most liberal city with the world’s biggest bunch of Flash geeks. All this PLUS a weekend in Amsterdam with my wife. The Van Gogh Museum, Salon Serpent… What more could a guy possibly want for Christmas?

OBO_FlashBox – LightBox in Flash (with added 3d)

by Devon O.· December 06, 2008· in Actionscript, Flash· 16 comments tags: flash 10, flex, lightbox
Just in for the holidays – a new LightBox JS implementation for Flash (with a Flash 10 3d Twist). Here’s a quickie example made with Flex just to see what I’m on about. The main drawback seems to be the new Flash Player 10 3d features tend to blur the edges of the picture’s frame. Not entirely sure why that is, but If anyone can explain, please let me know and I’ll do what I can to fix it up. If interested, the script is below. It requires TweenLite and the Tweener equations for the animation (I like to mix and match), though you’re welcome to rewrite it for another tweening engine. The main FlashBox class: [crayon-603d096e4062f544560168/] And, while you can use any little graphic preloader you’d like, I used the one below: [crayon-603d096e40639098285939/] Unfortunately, to get the OBO_FlashBox class to play nicely with Flex, you need to create a little Flex “bridge” that extends UIComponent like so: [crayon-603d096e40653128982879/] And finally, the mxml for the example shown: [crayon-603d096e4065a410606329/] Hope it may be useful. Enjoy…
