Pratique d’ActionScript 3

by Devon O.· April 28, 2008· in Life· 0 comments
I’ve been waiting for this one! Thibault Imbert of ByteArray.org has recently completed a book entitled “Pratique d’ActionScript 3” which was to be published by O’Reilly France. For reasons unspecified, the deal with O’Reilly apparently went belly up. Not one to deprive the world of knowledge, Mssr. Imbert has decided to release the book on his own in .pdf form free of charge to the public. Yes, the book is in French, but code, like math, is a universal language, and Thibault Imbert is a supergenius in the field and code examples abound in the work. You can download the 1200 page manual here. Enjoy – and a big fat merci beaucoup to the author…

A Simple Drawing Application and a Quick Glance at Safari

by Devon O.· April 27, 2008· in Actionscript, Flash· 1 comments
Taking a well-deserved break from the Navy and coming home to Ireland, I had a little time to put together a small example of what may be accomplished with the UI tools from my last post. Here’s a simple little drawing application that allows the user to adjust the size, color and shape of the drawing tool. It’s easily enough created by instantiating a new DrawingTablet instance and passing the width, height, and color of the canvas as arguments. A fourth Boolean argument determines whether or not a “save” button is shown. Note that in this example, the save button doesn’t really do anything. In actual use, a BitmapData instance of the drawing would be passed to a DrawingEvent.SAVE event which could then be passed on to an image encoder (such as the ones included in Adobe’s as3corelib package which may be downloaded from Google Code, here). So, for a quick example, the following document class may be used to create the .swf file below: [crayon-6046bdd6a9df1723539935/] The .as files may be downloaded here for any interested parties. In other news, I was surfing the other day when suddenly my Apple Updater popped up in front of me. An annoying little event that […]

UI, MXNA, RegEx, and More

by Devon O.· April 04, 2008· in Actionscript, Flash, Life· 6 comments
Just finished retooling a small package of six user interface tool/widget classes. While not extremely customizable, they are very lightweight (being entirely scripted). And of course you are welcome to mess with the script to produce something more suited to your own application design. You can check out an example here, view the documentation here, and download the .zip file of all the classes here, if interested. I also just discovered this morning that this blog has been added to the mxna aggregator. Kind of a nerdly thing, but it’s a rather prestigious honor. I’ve been getting most of my news of the Flash/Flex/Actionscript world from the fullasagoog and mxna blogs for what seems like ever, and now my own blog is a member of each. It’s a very nice feeling. For anyone new to RegEx (or old for that matter), Grant Skinner has just released a cool new Air application to try out. Get more info and the download here. Me, I’m still waiting for an Air version of gModeler for AS3 to come about. What a frabjous day that’ll be. So, I was just playing around in LinkedIn today (hence the shiny new button in the column to the right) and joined the […]
