BetweenAS3, Through AOS, and Around FOTB

Been extremely busy of late (not complaining), but thought I’d do a quick update post during lunch to get back into the swing of blogging.

First, just finished up a little intro tutorial/article on “Getting Started with BetweenAS3″. For those not familiar with it, BetweenAS3 is a great new tweening engine that’s simple as pie to use and seems to blow other engines out of the water performance wise. You can check out a nice slide show by the engine’s author here. And, if intrigued by that, you can get a gander at the article I wrote over on the TechLabs site. I’m working on a companion piece which goes into more advanced topics on the subject (slicing and scaling tweens, custom easing formulas, registering custom classes, etc). Hopefully that’ll be ready to go by next week. Keep an eye out if interested.

Couple new things to check out over at the Adobe Open Source site recently: The Text Layout Framework for some very great and advanced text control in Flash Player 10 is now a part of the Flex 4 SDK, and the Open Source Media Framework for building modular media players with little effort is now available for download. Haven’t had the opportunity to play around with either yet, but I’m looking forward to checking them both out – especially the OSMF – we do a lot of video work here at the agency where I work.

Finally, just confirmed (with myself, that is) that I’ll be attending Flash on the Beach in Brighton this year. I’m in Flash nerd heaven. Already having trouble picking and choosing which presentations to check out. For everyone else going, though, maybe I’ll see ya there!

Hey Devon be cool to meet up at FOTB. You in London at all before or after?

Hey Tink! That’d be awesome, though I’m not sure of my schedule. Most like I’ll get in Sunday night and leave Wednesday night or Thursday morning. I do plan on hitting the “inspired sessions” each night though – perhaps we could meet up at or before one of those…

Liquid Text Effect

Haven’t been too active around here lately due to a major on going project at work lately as well as the fact that my wife and I are in the slow process of moving homes. Really, the only free time it seems I have these days is during the lunch hour. So, over the past two days, I came up with this fun little toy during lunches[...]

Google’s Text To Speech Engine in Flash

I’m not sure how I managed to miss this, but I just happened to run across a ‘new’ (well, newish), albeit still unofficial, offering of Google today: text-to-speech. You can see what few details there are on this Techcrunch post. Basically, it just boils down to this though – you send your phrase to be [...]

Playing Around with the New UndoManager

Included in the Flex 4.0 SDK and the, just released, Flash Professional CS5 lies a new hidden little gem of a class: flashx.undo.UndoManager (although the Flex 4.0 SDK’s been out for awhile, I have to admit I didn’t even notice this until I installed Flash CS5 and started poking around the documentation looking for new [...]

Making Waves

In a previous post, “Digging into the Microphone in Flash Player 10.1″, reader David Law asked in the comments how it would be possible to save .wav files to the server. I wasn’t sure right offhand, but thought I’d spend my lunch hour yesterday looking into it. Well, after reading this quick tutorial on Adobe [...]

Some Drawing Fun and a Bad Movie You’ll Never See

Earlier today, Dave Gillem posted a link on Facebook to an incredible Processing based drawing application. Thought I’d have a go at reproducing something similar in Flash. Well, I failed miserably, but the results were still interesting enough to check out. You can play around with it below. Just mouse down to draw in the [...]
