FITCward Bound

by Devon O.· February 19, 2010· in Life· 0 comments
Just a quickie post to say I’m heading off to FITC Amsterdam tomorrow morning (and rub it in for those who can’t make it. Heh). Still haven’t decided on which presentations to check out (it’s a damn shame they’ve shortened the event to only 2 days and have 4 simultaneous presentations per time slot), or packed, or a multitude of other tasks that need to be accomplished before the morrow, but oh well… If anyone’s going and feels so inclined, keep an eye out for the cool coding cowboy below and stop and say howdy.

Lorenz Attractor – HTML5 Stylee

by Devon O.· February 06, 2010· in Life· 1 comments tags: html5, javascript, processing.js
First, let me just say this up front, I will give up Flash when they pry it from my cold dead fingers. When Flash is outlawed only outlaws will code in Actionscript. Add any other cliches you’d like to, here. The point is, I love the Flash Platform and will continue to use it for years to come. But, let’s face it, anyone who refuses to expand their skillset – whether it be with HTML5, Unity3D, or any other technology – or who at least chooses not to know their enemies won’t last very long in this game. So, that in mind, here is my first go at HTML5: a simple Lorenz Attractor. Not the most way-out thing folks have done, but ya gotta start somewhere. A few things I learned along the way: Trying to code in a OO fashion with Javascript is a serious pain in the ass. It’s funny that people have said this is the future of the web. For a Flash developer, it’s like stepping backwards in time 4 or 5 years. Any of you out there remember coding classes in Actionscript 1? Well, blow the dust off that nightmare memory ’cause it’s all coming […]

New Year’s Day 2010

by Devon O.· January 01, 2010· in Liberty, Life· 0 comments
Well, it took it’s own sweet time getting here, but here it finally is: 2010. No rocket cars or jet backs, but we do have video conferencing, holograms, and the ever increasing cybersprawl that is the web today, so sci fi and cartoons didn’t completely lie to us. And, maybe it’s just me, but it seems the future is starting to feel more like a promise again and less like a threat (cf. Chuck Palahniuk). Well, at least for a couple more years until the aliens return and all hell breaks loose. Sometimes it doesn’t feel like it, but this has been one damned eventful decade for me. I’ve taught myself actionscript and secured a wonderful future; I joined and was honorably discharged from the Navy where I met a whole lotta interesting people, lived in Sicily and the Middle East, and criss crossed the Atlantic in a boat you’d never think was large enough to make it; I’ve started life anew in a new country on a new continent with a new career; and most importantly, I finally met and married the girl of my dreams. Whew. Quite an action packed 10 years. Who’d a thunk it? Originally, my […]
