Glitchy Video

by Devon O.· October 17, 2010· in Flash, Life· 6 comments tags: glitch, video
Part I The other day my wife stumbled across this excellent Soulwire post on making glitches in image files and asked if I could do the same thing with video. Without actually reading the blog post, I just said sure, no problem. Well, after actually reading the article, it turned out to be a little more problematic than I realized. If you read the Soulwire post, you’ll see that the effect is achieved by loading an image file in binary format, jacking up the byte array with a bunch of garbage, then loading that damaged byte array back into a Loader instance with the loadBytes method then finally displaying the result. In order to do the same thing in real time, it would be necessary to capture each frame of video as an image file such as .jpg and go from there. Well, as most of you know, that is exactly what the JPGEncoder included in the Adobe as3corelib package does, so that is the first thing I tried using. Unfortunately, the results were just shameful. I wound up getting maybe .5 frames per second or so. Disgusting. I then tried Thibault Imbert’s optimized JPEGEncoder. The results were noticeably better, […]

Quick Sound Effects Generator

by Devon O.· May 12, 2010· in Flash, Life· 5 comments tags: sound effects
Need some beeps, boops, or bops, to go with your UI or games? Here’s a quickie for you. Got the idea from my Making Waves post. Just mess around with the sliders (or choose a preset), press ‘play’ to preview the sound, and ‘save’ to save the sound locally as a .wav file. There’s a bit of a strange bug though. The saved files play slower than previewed sounds. But that’s what you get in a lunch hour. If I sort that problem out (and if anyone has any ideas on what would cause that, post a comment), I may elaborate on this a bit more and create a desktop version in AIR. We’ll see.

None of This Runs Eternal

by Devon O.· May 02, 2010· in Liberty, Life· 0 comments tags: current 93, nurse with wound
It’s official. My wife just confirmed the hotel reservation where we’ll be staying the night of the Current 93 show in London on May 28. For those unfamiliar with Current 93, they are a band that rose from the depths of the early 80’s British industrial scene with the likes of such greats as Psychic TV, Cabaret Voltaire, 23 Skidoo, Coil, Nurse With Wound and others. The ‘band’ officially only consists of one permanent member; singer and song writer, David Tibet (born David Michael Bunting. The name Tibet was given to him by Throbbing Gristle/Psychic TV front wo/man Genesis Breyer P-Orridge and has seem to have stuck ever since). C93’s music style has ranged from full on industrial assault to almost classical style (with strings, piano, etc), to folk, to hard rock, to (most often) a beautiful mixture between any of the above. My introduction to Current 93 came around 1985 or 86 with the fantastic album Dog’s Blood Rising. I admit that what attracted me most at that time was that Tibet’s references to Christianity seemed like straight up tongue-in-cheek irony (I mean, just listen to this quick sample of “From Broken Cross, Locusts” to see what I’m talking […]

Another Year, Another Look

by Devon O.· March 21, 2010· in Life· 2 comments
As a few folks may have noticed, the blog is looking a little bit different as of today. I figured 2010 would be a good time to completely revamp the old blog, but really didn’t see anything that appealed to me all that much. Then my wonderful wife just happened to run across this new WordPress theme over at Tripleships.com, and I just couldn’t resist. Personally, I love the new look. However, all support docs are in Japanese, so it was a bit tricky to get it up and running properly, and I’m still not sure I have all the kinks ironed out. So, if you notice anything a bit strange going on (or just want to throw out some general feedback) let me know. Next thing to tackle is my personal site. The damn thing’s so old, it’s practically coming back into style (assuming it was ever there)…

FITC in Quick Review

by Devon O.· February 24, 2010· in Flash, Life· 0 comments tags: FITC
Well another FITC Amsterdam has come and gone and left its indelible mark of energy and inspiration. Thought I’d share a bit of what went on, however I’m writing this from a teensy laptop that came with the flat I’m staying in. It was a much appreciated gesture, but is not very conducive to typing, so this will probably be shorter and less detailed than intended. Besides I’m in Amsterdam another 3 days and got stuff to do… Day 1 Started the day with the Adobe Keynote presentation given by Richard Galvan and Mark Anders. This had its good and bad points. Nothing really new was presented here – it was all the stuff we’ve seen blogged from AdobeMax and MWC. Still it was interesting to see some of this in action: how Flash performs on Android devices for example or how Device Central CS5 will allow you to test the accelerometer of mobile devices (that is a great feature. My hat’s off to Adobe for that one). Very exciting stuff in the world of mobile development. Next up for me was James Eberhardt’s presentation on Building iPhone Apps in Flash CS5. Unfortunately, I came in late to a standing room only auditorium […]
