Spirography

by Devon O.· November 08, 2009· in Actionscript, Flash· 3 comments tags: spirograph
My wife mentioned something about Spirographs yesterday, so I thought “hey – why not make one in actionscript”. Two seconds of googling found the formulas I was looking for (as well as a nifty java example), and about 10 minutes of coding had something up and running in Flash. Play around with the sliders and hit “draw” to create a little Spirograph masterpiece of your own. Speaking of controls, the first slider controls the radius of the fixed circle, the second slider controls the radius of the rotating circle, the third slider controls the offset of the “pen tip” in the rotating circle, the checkbox specifies whether you’re drawing outside of the fixed circle or not, the color swatch will let you select a color to draw in, and finally, if you just want to see the thing in action, click on the “Randomize!” button and see what you get. If interested, the whole script is below (I used bit-101’s minimal slider, button, and checkbox, and my own color picker, if you’d like to compile this thing): [crayon-600c51995eef1326142723/]

Real Drawing to Augmented Reality

by Devon O.· October 23, 2009· in Actionscript, Flash· 4 comments tags: augmented reality, papervision3d
Augmented reality may prove to just be a flash in the pan trend in the Flash world, but let’s face it – it’s fun. So, that in mind, here’s a little something I was just fiddling around with: a small app that takes an actual drawing (as in pen and paper – you know – analog) and converts it into a 3d augmented reality thingamajig. To give it a try below: Print out this marker (ignore the left hand / right hand bs. That was for another project and I was too lazy to create a new marker image). Make a small drawing on a piece of paper. You can use colours, but keep the contrast as high as possible (a black drawing on white paper will work best, but not be very interesting). Double click on the app below and allow webcam access. Hold your drawing up so that it fits nicely into the red square then hit the space bar. When the app tells you to, put down your drawing and hold up the marker you printed out to see your work of art hover in 3 dimensions in front of your face. Be amazed… If you don’t […]

Halloween I

by Devon O.· October 21, 2009· in Flash, Liberty, Life· 1 comments
A little early Halloween treat. I just love this time of year. By the way, you’ll need your sound on for the full effect. And try moving your mouse across the .swf. For a real Halloween treat, assuming you have about 20 some minutes to kill, I recommend turning off all the lights, turning your volume to max, crouching somewhere in your darkened room and listening to the entire song – “I Have a Special Plan for this World”. The audio piece is a story/poem written by horror author Thomas Ligotti and set to “music” and read by David Tibet of Current 93 (by far, my favorite musician). It’s… well.. let’s just say it’s rather disturbing. But in a good way… More Halloween fun to come, I’m sure…

Some Windchimes and More from FOTB

by Devon O.· September 26, 2009· in Flash, Life· 4 comments tags: flash on the beach, fotb, jiglib, jiglibflash, papervision3d
So I got an idea into my head while at Flash on the Beach. This quick example I made pretty much has nothing to do with it, but it’s a first draft prototype of what I was thinking of. Anyway, check out these windchimes made with jiglibflash and pv3d. Use your mouse to orbit around a little and to see the chimes in action, blow into your microphone (okay, so you can talk, shout, or thump on the mic, if you’d like, but they’re windchimes – why ruin the illusion). One thing I noticed about jiglib is that it seems to register collisions (using the RigidBody.collisions array) even when there aren’t any. Need to look into that, and if anyone has better suggestions for collision detection with jiglib, post ’em here. And for those interested, here’s a few more videos and pictures from Flash on the Beach ’09. Maybe someday I’ll join the rest of the world and get a Flickr and/or Youtube account for stuff like this… Here’s a nice video of Joa Ebert demonstrating his Java to .swf compiler. Still blown away by this. After 9 minutes of typing (on a completely unmarked/black keyboard!) Joa hits the compile […]

FOTB in Review – Day 3

by Devon O.· September 23, 2009· in Flash, Liberty, Life· 0 comments tags: flash on the beach, fotb
Bit of an overcast day today in Brighton, but still fairly comfortable. Started out the day with a bit of a let down. Had to decide between Andre Michelle and Serge Jespers. Unwisely, I picked Jespers who turned out to be a no-show. He was replaced with Mark Doherty who did a fairly good job for an unscheduled stand in. He gave a quick run down on designing for web, desktop, and mobile and presented a few good tips (such as using SWiX for data transfer on mobile devices that may choke on xml). Really made me want to look into the whole Open Screen Project / Fund. Next up was the always inspirational Mario Klingemann, self proclaimed “math groupie”. Not much to say here. It’s a presentation that really needs to be seen. The man is a supergenius and his enthusiasm is truly contagious. Then came Seb Lee-Delisle with a little look at PV3D usage and “tween engine bashing”. A lot of fun here with some anaglyphic 3D (glasses included) and some micro glow stick motion detection. Finally came a sneak peak at some upcoming features of the incredible Big and Small site. After lunch came the Jam Throw […]
